The developers of the computer were scientists and engineers, much too
academic to foresee the cancer that would grow from the spawn of their little
device. It was made to model FSM's, not cartoon fishes. The internet was a
similar idea: It was a network for universities, to exchange information. Of
course, noone considered something as absurd as spam when they designed email.
On the other hand, it is unavoidable that certain people will push technology
to the outer limits of absurdity. I have no problem with that. I just have a
problem with people doing any of it to get fame out of it, or even money.
People who have no intellectual spirit, no curiosity, people who only hack for
the purpose of public masturbation.
And there's more and more people, blind in their desperation to be a computer
hacker. This is mainly due to the theatrical image of hackers in modern media.
Yea, that's right. The typical hollywood hacker is the handsome, unshaved guy
with the shady past. He posesses knowledge of some dark art to magically make
all technical and computer devices bend to his very will. But he's still the
renegade outlaw protagonist, and in the end, he saves the world and rescues
the princess.

And now we have IRC servers full of milw0rm* kids, just like YOU, dear reader,
who want to be the world's coolest Stan Jobson. People think they're oldskool
just because they publish their petty mysql dumps in plaintext. Noone is into
freedom of information anymore, the people who call themselves hackers now
want to *hide* information. Noone discloses anything anymore, it's a big gay
fuckfest of mutual "owning". Not that it wouldn't require any effort. There's
a lot of hard work involved to get your part of the wank. But understand: I am
not talking about that. I am talking about motivation, and the motivation for
all of this is hollow. Purpose has replaced passion. And without passion,
there is no beauty in what you do.

I stand against this development. The .aware zine will always contain actual
information; technical and amateur-level scientific papers. This is what
hacking should be about - and I don't care about the area of science covered.
Chemistry and biology are as good as math or electronics, which are in turn as
good as any topic of information science or computer security.
